New Research Alert! The Will Lab cools a gas of bosonic molecules to its lowest temperatures yet!
In Nature Physics, the Will Lab reports on a method to protect molecules from lossy inelastic collisions, so-called microwave shielding. The team creates ultracold gases of sodium-cesium molecules with a lifetime of 1 second, a 100x improvement over previous results. This has allowed the cooling of a gas of bosonic molecules to its coldest temperatures yet, only about 35 nK above absolute zero - a step closer to a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate.
