Monetary Giving

Cash donations are easy, immediate, and entitle you to a federal income tax charitable deduction of up to 60% of your adjusted gross income. They also minimize the administrative load on the Department and are especially helpful with expenses that fall outside the purview of fiscal budgets, grant guidelines, and other designated funding.

Credit Card: navigate to Columbia's secure online giving form or call 866-443-8797 and then select one of the following Physics Department funds:

  • Graduate Students Physics Gifts
  • Undergraduate Student Physics Gift
  • Undergraduate Labs Physics Gift
  • Physics Chairman Discretionary Gift
  • Columbia Society for Women in Physics

Each of these funds will direct your donation to the Physics Department, but if you have questions or wish to earmark your donation for a different purpose, please email Ashley Delphia, Director of Academic Administration and Finance ([email protected]).

Checks: please make your gift payable to Columbia University. To be certain your donation reaches the Department, make sure to include "to be used in support of the Columbia Physics Department" on your check. Checks can be mailed to:

Sponsored Projects

If you're interested in channeling your support to specific projects, the department has identified several opportunities that would benefit from sponsorship. To inquiry about these or share your own suggestions for sponsored projects, please contact Ashley Delphia, Director of Academic Administration and Finance ([email protected]).

Mailroom Conversion to Student Space

Schools no longer need extensive mailroom facilities now that most written communication is conducted online. We believe that converting our current mailroom setup into designated space for our graduate students is an investment that would that could improve the student experience and become a highlight of program recruitment. For this reason, this is presently the top project on our priority list.

The 7th floor conference room is the only meeting space in Pupin Hall where the entire Physics faculty can congregate for departmental meetings. It's also one of the few spaces suitable for guest seminars and dissertation defenses. But the current setup is dated and items are in need of repair, including the projector screen and cabinetry. A more comfortable design and updated environment would benefit both members and guests of our community.

Adverse experiences such as medical issues, mental health concerns, food and housing insecurity, etc., can have devastating effects on the ability of students to complete their studies.

While the Department can't prevent setbacks, we are in a position to connect students to resources and support, which can help mitigate the long-term impact of adversity. To that end, we would be grateful to anyone willing to sponsor or donate to a department well-being fund.
