Please submit requests as early as possible to allow sufficient time for review, recruitment, onboarding, and any required university approvals.
Departments seeking to hire individuals who require visa sponsorship should plan accordingly and submit employment requests well in advance of the anticipated start date.
The Physics Department requires a minimum lead time of:
- 3 months for appointments requiring J-1 visa sponsorship
- 6 months for appointments requiring H-1B visa sponsorship
These timelines allow for departmental review, university processing, and immigration-related requirements. Delays in submitting hiring requests may impact the candidate's ability to begin employment on the desired start date.
Student employees are limited to 20 hours per week during the academic year, inclusive of all on-campus positions held at Columbia University. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that proposed work schedules comply with university employment policies and do not cause a student to exceed the maximum allowable hours.
