Columbia Physicists Place Stringent Constraints on a Popular Resolution to the Hubble Tension

November 21, 2023

New work led by Columbia Physics PhD student Sam Goldstein and Assistant Professor J. Colin Hill places stringent constraints on a popular resolution to the Hubble tension known as early dark energy (EDE). Their work, which was published in Physical Review Letters,  shows that EDE models are incompatible with current measurements of the Lyman-α forest – absorption lines imprinted in distant quasar spectra by hydrogen gas clouds along the line of sight. Their paper was also highlighted in Physics Magazine and discussed in a recent Science Magazine article.
