Effective Field Theories in Dark Matter Hunting: Spin-Dependent Interactions in Optimal Anti-Ferromagnetic Materials

In this talk, I will explore how effective field theories (EFTs) can be used as a powerful framework for describing interactions—particularly non-linear couplings—between dark matter particles and the collective modes of target materials. I will focus specifically on the interaction of dark matter particles with magnons, which are quasi-particles arising from spin wave excitations in anti-ferromagnetic materials. Materials like nickel oxide are optimal candidates for detecting sub-MeV dark matter with spin-dependent interactions, as well as meV QCD axion absorption.
