"Luttinger-compensated topological ferrimagnism in UOTe induced by a 1D superlattice"


Magnetic vdW materials are of great interest for fundamental physics and spintronic applications. UOTe, a recently synthesized vdW magnet, is a promising platform for the coexistence of topology, time-reversal symmetry breaking, and correlations of the 5f electrons. On the square lattice of UOTe, we discovered a 1D superlattice with a periodicity of ~3nm. This 1D superlattice strongly modulates the low-energy electrons of UOTe. Whereas the longitudinal transport shows strong anisotropy, suggesting a quasi-1D electronic orbit, the transverse transport shows a giant anomalous Hall effect reaching 0.5e^2/h per layer, consistent with a circular 2D electronic orbit. This anomalous Hall effect occurs with near-zero magnetization, and, remarkably, the anomalous Hall angle is the highest in all bulk magnetic materials. These results reveal a novel Luttiinger-compensated ferrimagnetic state, where compensation between U spin-up and spin-down is governed by the Luttinger theorem, and the symmetry breaking from the 1D superlattice generates a strongly anisotropic topological Fermi surface, analogous to quantum Hall stripes.
