Title: Advancing Global Fusion Energy: The IAEA’s Role in Development, Innovation and Collaboration

Abstract: This talk will present an in-depth overview of the IAEA's extensive efforts in advancing Fusion Energy. The IAEA plays a pivotal role as a convener for the international fusion community, organizing large-scale events that shape the global fusion agenda, with a particular focus on engaging both the public and private sectors. The Agency is dedicated to forging strategic partnerships with world-renowned institutions and coordinating research projects that drive fusion R&D forward. In addition, the IAEA supports these efforts by providing and managing essential atomic and plasma physics data, as well as overseeing critical resources such as the Fusion Device Information System. The IAEA’s work also encompasses the growth of activities related to fusion engineering, safety, and regulatory aspects. In response to the evolving fusion landscape, and with the aim of establishing a unified global fusion community, the IAEA is actively pursuing new initiatives to accelerate the research, development, demonstration, and deployment of safe and sustainable fusion energy to the market.

Bio: Dr. Matteo Barbarino currently serves as the Fusion Physicist at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where he oversees the Agency's initiatives and international collaborations in fusion energy, including partnerships with ITER, MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and other key global stakeholders.     Before joining the IAEA, Dr. Barbarino was a research scientist in leading laboratories across the USA and Europe, where he made contributions to both experimental and theoretical studies in laser fusion.     In addition to his role at the IAEA, Dr. Barbarino serves as the Technical Adviser for the International Group of Legal Experts on Fusion Energy (FELEX). He is also an active member of several influential committees, including the ITPA Coordinating Committee, the IEA Fusion Power Coordinating Committee, the CICLOP Group, and the UN InterAgency Working Group on Artificial Intelligence.     Dr. Barbarino holds a PhD and MSc in Physics from Texas A&M University, as well as a BSc in Electrical Engineering.

This talk will be offered in a hybrid format. If you wish to participate remotely, please send an email to [email protected].
