Research Overview

"In Pursuit of the Higgs"

The Higgs boson, discovered at the Large Hadron Collider, is exceptional in that it provides all other particles with their mass, and it is implicated in the evolution and perhaps fate, of our universe. This talk will review what we’ve learned so far about the Higgs and explore the opportunities for pinning down its most elusive, and important properties. Higgs Factories, the machines envisioned to tackle this work, take advantage of recent developments in accelerator technology, and we will look at one such technology with important recent advances: superconducting accelerating cavities. These are now on the cusp of being accessible not only for large colliders, but also for a wide range of societal applications from semiconductor manufacturing to clean nuclear power. Some of this work has been done by the Center for Bright Beams, an NSF Science and Technology Centerdirected by the speaker.
