"Quantum Geometry and the Quantum Hall Effect."

While the quantum Hall effect (QHE) was a surprise discovery over forty years ago, experimental discoveries of new aspects keep reenergizing the field, most recently that the fractionally-quantized version originally seen in high magnetic fields, can also occur as a consequence of spontaneous magnetization in flat Bloch bands. The fractional QHE is exhibited by an incompressible quantum fluid with topological order, which when it is “non-Abelian”, has remarkable entanglement properties that could provide a platform for topologically-protected quantum computing. Most work to date has focused on its topological properties, and there is little understanding of its energetics. I will describe quantum geometric features of the quantum Hall fluids that underly their incompressibility.
