Astrophysics III will cover topics important for research at Columbia, including:
-- dark matter
-- nuclear astrophysics
-- interior of neutron stars, magnetars
-- gravitational waves
-- radiative transfer theory
-- particle astrophysics, neutrinos
-- stellar dynamics, clusters and related phenomena (e.g. tidal disruption events)
-- plasma physics, magnetic reconnection, collisionless shocks, particle acceleration
-- advanced radiative processes, from coherent radio emission (e.g. Fast Radio Bursts) to very high-energy gamma-rays to neutrinos
-- experimental techniques and observational methods
-- numerical methods of modern simulations
The range of topics for Astrophysics III is very broad, and the detailed syllabus will depend on who teaches the course. It can be taught every other year, so that students will have 2-3 chances to choose from whom they take Astro III. They could also take it multiple times.
