I will discuss a method for computing the gravitational Compton amplitude for the scattering of waves off compact objects to high loop order. A central ingredient is the resummation of partial waves, a classic problem in quantum-mechanical scattering, which we carry out here in the gravitational setting. This allows us to obtain the amplitude through (O(G^7)), where we encounter the first ultraviolet divergence in a classical gravitational amplitude and the need for finite-size effects. I will also discuss the matching to black-hole perturbation theory and the resulting predictions for black-hole tidal response.
