Title: Reading the Shrapnel of Cosmic Fireworks
Abstract: “The Universe is full of cosmic fireworks: stars explode, clusters of galaxies collide, and black holes blow winds reaching a hundred million miles per hour. These explosions, collisions, and outbursts produce shock waves that accelerate particles like shrapnel to nearly the speed of light, and those particles in turn produce light that travels across the Universe to us. By studying this light—shrapnel of shrapnel—we can uncover the physics that powers some of the Universe’s most extreme events.”
We'll start the evening at 8:00pm with some astronomy trivia, followed by the talk and Q&A. From 9:10-10:00pm, we will be outside observing on campus (weather permitting).
