"Haloscopes and the Search for Axion Dark Matter" with Dr. Reina Maruyama from Yale University

Abstract: Astrophysical observations give overwhelming evidence for the existence of dark matter, and yet we know little about what it is. Axion is a compelling candidate, as it also provides a solution to the strong CP problem in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) as proposed by Peccei & Quinn. I will discuss the ongoing search for the axion dark matter at Yale, including the latest results from the HAYSTAC experiment, optimized for axion searches around 20 μeV. I will then discuss ALPHA, the next generation experiment under construction at Yale. ALPHA uses a tunable wire metamaterial-based resonator to enhance axion detection at higher masses. I will conclude with a summary of our R&D program to enhance axion detection capabilities, including the development of quantum-enhanced/limited sensors and single-photon detection with Rydberg atoms.
