Mudd Hall, 500 W. 120 St., New York, NY 10027 233

Speaker: Ryan Wagner, IAEA

Title: "Fusion Power Plant Design"

Abstract:

Market conditions are becoming very attractive for the development of commercial fusion power. Public and private fusion programs are developing a large variety of fusion technologies. At the heart of a fusion power plant is the tokamak, stellarator, Z-pinch, reverse field configuration, inertial fusion, magneto-inertial fusion, etc. Fusion power plants are much more than a tokamak or stellarator. There are many subsystems to support the production of a fusion plasma. These include fuelling systems, heating systems, cryogenics, power systems, cooling water, diagnostics, control systems, etc. The purpose of this presentation is to draw attention to these systems to highlight the many ways a person can get involved in the emerging fusion industry. In addition, an overview of a fusion engineering program will be presented to explain the complexity in designing a fusion power plant.

Bio: Ryan Wagner is currently the IAEA Fusion Technical Lead. He is developing a fusion technology development and deployment program within the agency. The purpose of the program is to bring the fusion community together to address various topics such as fusion codes and standards, tritium breeding, workforce development, remote handling and maintenance, etc. His team is developing the IAEA FUSE CONNECT platform to highlight fusion technologies. He was an early employee of Commonwealth Fusion Systems where, as the Head of Systems Engineering and Design Integration, he established the SPARC engineering program and managed a team of systems and project engineers. Prior to CFS, he worked at the ITER Organization as the Industrial Controls Coordinator managing the integration of various subsystems.

Seminar Access: In-person seminars are only available to CU ID holders. At this time, Non-Columbia affiliates and the general public are only invited to participate remotely. Contact [email protected] if you would like the Zoom link for this seminar.
