Professor Störmer joined Columbia University in the beginning of 1998 after working for 20 years in the Research Area of Bell Labs. That same year, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Daniel Tsui and Robert Laughlin "for their discovery of a new form of quantum fluid with fractionally charged excitations." Professor Störmer earned his Ph.D. from the University of Stuttgart. His area of expertise is in condensed matter physics with an emphasis on semiconductors, particularly the physics of lower-dimensional systems, such as two-dimensional, one-dimensional and zero-dimensional systems.
